A fast, cold $3 swim in Summerlin.
After an awesome dinner at Carmine's in Caesars last night, with more pasta than any one person should eat in a single sitting, it is a late morning of emails and then a swim today.
Sleep is still all over the place after making the rookie mistake of sleeping for the full flight over from London.
Emails done, head back over to Summerlin this morning for a second attempt at the Pavilion Center Pool. The first attempt was back in April 2019, only to arrive and find a packed pool in the middle of a swimming competition.
The lap swim session starts at 5:30am, and I did note there is a 50m session until 7am, but there is no chance of making that today.
Arrive to find people waiting around the entrance and a note on the door saying, 'Pool closed for maintenance opening 10am.' Lucky I did not come earlier.
Wait the ten minutes, then head in to pay the absolute bargain $3 entry. I love whatever state or city subsidies are funding swimming.
Head to the changing rooms, eventually figure out the digital PIN code lockers, then head out to the pool deck.
The pool is a 50m x 25 yard pool, but in a slightly unusual format. It is currently set up with 25 yard lanes in two blocks at either end of the pool. Mid-pool, there are shallow steps down into what seems to be a shallower area, and a lifeguard chair on a concrete jetty sticking out into the pool. I count eight 50m lanes marked out on the pool floor.
Walk to the far set of lanes, pick a free lane and jump in.
Still on the distance game in readiness for Coniston, so note the clock at 20 minutes and decide to keep going with a small step up in pace until the pool timer hits 60.
The water is perfectly cold, but the AC from the overhead air ducts is blowing freezing cold air from the ceiling onto my back.
The left shoulder seems almost okay now, after 6+ months of discomfort. Typically, this happens just as I finally have an appointment next week.
Swim done, finish up with 4,200 yards.
Walking back to the car, I notice some construction at the end of the pool building. On closer inspection, there is a brand new 50m pool, full of water and lane ropes. There are still some minor works going on around the edges, but a quick Google suggests the new $10m pool is ready to open any day now.
Will have to make another trip to get this one on the list.
Egg Works for lunch, then heading to Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
Pool Review
Great pool, especially at $3! The pool feels quite fast, the water temperature is perfectly cold, and there is a little bit of detritus in the water, but not too bad. Great facilities, and getting even better soon with the new outdoor 50m pool.
