Great Jewish Community Center pool on the Upper West Side.
Quick swim on the Upper West Side!
With 30 minutes to pool close, this was going to be a fast in and out, with no time for messing about… So leaving my guest pass in my jeans pocket did not help!
From the locker room on the 5th floor (featuring more complimentary warmed towels than I’ve ever seen!), the pool at the Manhatten Jewish Community Center is just a quick flight of stairs up to the 6th-floor pool deck. As you reach the top step, you’re met with a fantastic glass panoramic view looking through buildings across towards Central Park.
The pool is busy, but the central lanes have a couple of well-paced swimmers, so I set the Garmin Swim watch and make a start. Six lengths in, sudden doubt, is this 25 yards or metres? A quick glance down the lane, definitely yards, when you’ve seen enough pools, amazing you can instantly tell the 2 meters difference!
Set off again to complete a total of 1,200 yards with just seconds to spare before the lifeguard starts to clear the pool.
All in, a great pool, certainly reset the mood following the not so fab swim at the Equitable Center earlier in the day.
Swim finished, changed and done. Make a brisk 20-minute walk back downtown past Columbus circus to meet colleagues and top-up the carbs that evening at Becco, an all you can eat pasta restaurant! Followed by a pint of Sam Adam’s in a typical New York Irish Bar - with live entertainment straight from Donegal. Early night, off to Chicago tomorrow.

The JCC is a great venue, the pool was a perfect 25-yard lap swim with New York views. Yes, another premium $35 entry fee but the facility is definitely value for money (But do check the timetable!)
