In Nashville, Tennessee, for a conference and, after a much-anticipated visit to the Gibson Garage and an evening exploring celebrity-owned bars (Post Malone's Posty's and Luke Combs' Category 10. I don't partake in the line dancing!), I'm ready for a swim this morning.

There aren't many pools around downtown Nashville, so head 20 minutes down the road to Brentwood in the southern suburbs.

Arrive and admire the empty but fully operational splash park as I follow it around to the sports complex entrance. Through the reception windows, I can see the pool is set up in 50m lanes, but it is extremely busy with a swim squad session taking up six of the eight lanes.

Fortunately, I can see the two public lanes on the near side have only two swimmers between them. Pay the $8 entrance fee and head to the locker room.

Out onto the very busy pool deck. Love a swim session with decent music blasting from a boombox!

Immediately in front of me is a very slim three-lane 25-yard pool, currently hosting a rather energetic water Zumba session. Beyond that is the main 50m pool, with plenty of white water from the sprint 50s being bashed out by the swim squad.

Pick my lane and jump in with a kid who looks like he should be fast. He's finishing a drill as I hop in. Give him the customary quick hello and ask if we should circle swim. He doesn't seem too impressed. I think he's expecting me to get in his way. He gives me a 'yeah, but let me go first' as he puts on a pair of fins. Catch him at the first turn, and I think we have a better understanding of how this is going to play out. He doesn't last another five minutes before he's out and gone, leaving me with a lane to myself.

Put 1km on the watch, then break the rest down into a 400, some 200s and a bunch of 100s. Finish with a standard 3.2km session, all the while trying not to race the kids in the next lane doing 50s off the blocks.

Two things stand out.

The shallow end has a strange slope in the final couple of feet before the wall. It makes me think quickly during the first few turns at that end, as it looks odd underwater until I get familiar with it.

The water also has a rather chemical taste and leaves me with that old furry-mouth feeling. Chewing gum, please!

Swim done, and Tennessee is now on the 'swum' list.

Take the scenic route back towards downtown Nashville through the fancy residential streets of Green Hills.
